Church’s Future Vision      Project Manager Hired

Dryden Construction Company of Lancaster has been hired by Maple Street Church to provide technical guidance on an envisioned major renovation project.

The contract, authorizing payment of $50 per hour for up to 100 hours, was approved unanimously by the Administrative Council at its January meeting.

Frank Melick, chair of the standing Renovation Committee, brought the action to the floor. The work of the company, he said, would be to suggest layout, location feasibility, value engineering and preliminary construction cost estimates of  several prioritized building needs. These include installation of an elevator to serve three floors and meet American with Disabilities Act requirements; restroom expansion and upgrade, kitchen renovation and expansion and upgrading the air conditioning system to cool all parts of the building.

The contract is a direct result of the survey recently taken to gain a better understanding of how folks at Maple Street envision the future.

Hopkins Maple Street 2003 Lay Leader

Marta Hopkins makes a difference wherever she goes and in whatever she does. She became a member of Maple Street Church on May 19, 1996, under the pastoral leadership of Larry Swaisgood, and she has brought a refreshing spirituality to the Church. She will continue to do that in 2003 as she puts on the mantle of Lay Leader.

She was elected to succeed Duane “Buzz” Bussart, who has completed three years as Lay Leader. Her tasks are to work with the pastor in keeping the congregation informed about our United Methodist Connection, organizing the local church for effective ministry and to assist the pastor in shepherding the people. She is an ex-officio member of all church committees and a voting member of the Administrative Council and Personnel Committee

Marta lives with three of her four children at Lancaster Camp Ground, and she is employed as a school psychologist in an area school district. She earned a Master Degree in Education.
After-Christmas Gift

It was a delayed-blessing, and that made it special.  The Maple Street “Joyful Voices” finally got to give their Christmas Program on January 5.  And, what a  treat it was, as we Listened in to the WISH-Radio program.  The program featured music and acting.  The congregation stood in appreciation for well-earned applause.  Director of the program was Molly Hinkle, assisted by Danielle Mc-Broom and Hilary Hopkins.  Before Christmas, before the cold and flu bugs started to bite, the troupe sang for the residents at Rock Mill Rehabilitation Center. A CD has been made of the program (pictured right) and may be purchased for $6.  Of this amount, $5 will go into an account to treat “The Joyful Voices” to a very special outing.  The sound has been enhanced somewhat, But it still has areas where some voices fade.  The disk is essentially the Maple Street radio program broadcast on WFCO, 90.9 fm.  To reserve your copy, contact the church Office, or send $6 to “Joyful Voices” Maple Street United Methodist. The other $1 will cover cost of production.

    Financial Report for 2002

Bruce and Ramona Frank take a food break at the “Sidewalk Café” during the Holiday Craft Bazaar.

Mission Team Will Send Eight To Haiti in June

Eight people from Maple Street Church will go to Haiti in June. That’s the official word from Joyce Melick, who is heading up the trip. They are as follows: Ron and Kathi Boyer, Becky Baughman, Larry Alspaugh, JoAnn Phillips, Joyce Melick, Anna Newman and Kristy Howard. You will be hearing more about the trip and these folks in the next issue of The Maple Leaf. Cost per person is between $1,200 and $1,400.

The Holiday Craft Bazaar, on December 7, will provide a big boost toward financing the trip. The Missions Team made $766.35. This event was so successful that another bazaar will be held this year in November.

The Super Bowl Sunday soup and sub was a super event, too. Proceeds were $262.09. Again, proceeds will be used to help finance the Haiti trip.

Blanket Sunday is February 16. A special offering will be received during the worship service. For only $5 you can purchase a blanket for a victim of a natural disaster. This is a project of Church World Service.

For those interested in doing a missions trip a little closer to home, there is a District Volunteer in Mission trip to Henderson, KY. This is a house-building trip sponsored by SOWER 2003.

A District Volunteer in Mission trip to Mexico led by Gay Blau is also planned for this year.

A Mission trip to Bolivia is another opportunity for you. Wes & Libby Wilson, former missionaries to Bolivia, are leading this trip. For more information about any of these mission events, contact Janet Meadows.

At left, Helen Parcels, aided by Rachel Noland, found a lot of buyers for her handmade necklaces at the bazaar. At right, Norma Woltz and her daughter Beverly Pugh work their booth. Other Mission Team members managed a booth that featured crafts and baked goods.

A Candle Light Dinner is planned for February 14. It begins at 7:00 pm with appetizers and fellowship followed by dinner at 7:30 pm. The menu consists of Chicken Cordon Bleu, Vegetable, Twice Baked Potato, Assorted Dinner Rolls, Salad, Dessert & Beverage. Tickets are available from the Mission Team at $12. Proceeds go toward the Mission Encounter to Haiti. Deadline for purchasing tickets is February 9.

In the months when there are five Sundays, the Mission team will sponsor a dinner after Worship during the Fellowship Hour. Dates for these dinners are: March 30, June 29, August 31 and November 30. Proceeds will help fund our Mission projects in 2003.

The Mission Team also gave $500 of the funds they earned to be paid toward 2002 Apportionments.

The 2 Cents a Meal offerings will be continued in 2003. Dates for the offerings are: March 23, June 22, September 28 and December 28. Half of these offerings are sent to the West Ohio Conference for hunger projects it supports. The rest stays here a Maple Street to help fund our Wednesday Community Lunches. The last 2 cents a meal offering was received on December 22. It totaled $59.86.

The Team again will hold a Parking Lot Sale. This time it will be May 17. Also, we’ll return to Dave Ward’s Pumpkin Patch for picking. Dates will be September 13 and 20.

Global Gathering IV, sponsored by the General Board of Global Ministries, is April 10-13, 2003 in Birmingham, Alabama. This is an opportunity to witness the great work being accomplished by acting together within our United Methodist Church connection.

The Newark District Celebration Banquet is April 5 at Etna United Methodist Church. The speaker for the evening is Keith Wasserman from Good Works, Inc in Athens. More details later.

They Made A Difference

Michelle and Paul Pilat were with us at Maple Street for only about a year. Then his company transferred him. More than 135 people turned out for a surprise “We’ll Miss You” dinner January 12. There were tears, and laughter. They made a tremendous impact on the ministries at Maple Street, especially in the Sunday Evening Praise Service. We wish them, and daughters Brittany and Rachel, great happiness and know they will bring happiness to another church family. Their temporary address (until their house is finished) is 143 Meadowcreek Dr., Unit H, Wadsworth OH 44281.

New Faces to Care for Toddlers, says Education Team

A mixture of new and familiar faces will be caring for toddlers during worship, starting with the New Year. We are fortunate to have such dedicated team members!

The Toddler Team: Terra and Jason Ruff will be providing care in the Toddlers’ Room on the first Sunday of each month. On the second Sunday, Debbie Robinson and Jodi Miller will be the caregivers. The third Sunday will be covered by Gladys Jones and Patti Snoke, while Mitch, Diane and Whitney Nusser will take care of the fourth Sunday. Kelly Craiglow and Holly Snider will work on fifth Sundays, and will also serve as substitutes or assistants when necessary. Janet Meadows and Debbie Julian will also serve as substitutes or assistants.

Parents: You are welcome to leave your toddler with the caregivers while you attend worship. Please be sure to give the caregivers any special instructions, and especially let them know if a different person will be picking up your child. Our caregivers have instructions not to release children to unknown parties. Also, if your child will need diapers, sippy cups, etc., please provide these. Please put your toddler’s name or initials on all items.

The main goal of our caregivers is to keep all the toddlers safe, healthy and happy while you worship. If a problem such as crying or being unruly lasts more than a few moments, we will send for you.

Our caregivers will also try to offer a story, a religious video, a song, or a Biblically themed coloring paper or craft, to those toddlers who are interested. We have a variety of toys. Your toddler may also be offered a small snack, such as a cookie, so be sure to let the caregivers know if there are special health or dietary concerns.

Teens and Parents of Teens: We are fortunate to have some teens who drop by the toddlers room to see if help is needed. The caregivers are in charge of deciding if help is needed, and what kind of help. Please be aware that on some Sundays one or two teens will be needed, and on other Sundays there may be no need for help. Teens who are asked to stay will be assigned specific tasks, such as staying with a wobbly toddler to avoid falls, or reading a book to a small group.

Youth Fellowship’s

2003 Mission Trip

Already in Works

We, the Maple Street Youth, are thankful for the help that they have received this holiday season.  We are very grateful for the donations of coats and mittens from the congregation.  The clothing was distributed to charity organizations for the holidays.  We were amazed at the amount of coats we were able to distribute.

We had a great holiday party.  A visit was made to Fairfield Medical Center, bearing gifts for the pediatric patients.  We then enjoyed a nice party here at the church.  A special thanks to Dwight Hoover, the evening DJ, for all of the fun he provided.

We are looking forward to a great 2003.  We hope that everyone enjoyed their holiday season.  Planning continues for the next youth mission trip.  We are going to follow the same format as last year.  The trip is open only to youth members who regularly attend youth and their parents.

We appreciate the interest that has evolved from other people in the church; however, this is a youth mission trip.  Final word on the dates and destination will be given in early January. God Bless
