On June 2, at 6:30 pm, the "Servants of the Master" gospel quartet will providing a treat for our Sunday Evening Praise Service. They are based out of Medina, Ohio and have been together for 7 years. Mike Pilat organized the quartet and has a Worship and Music degree from Ashland Theological Seminary. Mike sings bass along with Kevin Ewing, the baritone, Brett Rabung, the lead, and Christopher Morrison, the tenor.

The "Servants of the Master" enjoy ministering to people across North Eastern Ohio at church services, preaching missions, and special programs. Membership Committee Outlines Ambitious Plans

The membership committee consists of Sandy Williams, Carolyn Starner, Betty DeLong, Larry Reams, Larry Noland and Bill Baughman(Chr). Our mission for 2002 will be to educate and motivate the membership at Maple Street. We have some exciting plans for 2002 which are: 1. Utilize the Church van to get members to Sunday School, Church and Church functions; 2. Utilize church expertise and give classes like Estate Planning, Taxes, Real Estate, Computers and Insurance. (Watch the Maple Street Monthly for times and places;) 3. Educate the members on doing God's work. There is monetary tithing and time tithing, and we want to motivate members to volunteer in doing God's work; 4. Develop a New Member program (From First Time Attender/Visitor to new member;) 5. Enhance the visitation of shut-in’s and those in the hospital; 6. Partner with the Evangelism and Worship committees to streamline work and enhance the benefits to all church members from these committees; 7. Work with the youth groups in participating in more Church functions along with the adults.

There is much work to do and as you can see, it will take more than the Membership Committee to make all this happen. That’s why we will be asking for volunteers to assist in making these programs work to the benefit of God, the Church and it’s members. If you see a program that you would like to minister, please contact any of the Membership Committee listed above.

In his name. - Bill Baughman, Chair

Dear Maple Street Friends, Thank you for your thoughts and prayers this past year, especially with the passing of my father. Your comforting words were felt by all of us. As always, when support was needed by our church, our friends were with us. In Christian Love, - Mark, Kim, Kalynn and Stacy Renko

Dear Maple Street Friends, Your signed greeting cards are really appreciated. I can visualize many of you as you faithfully wait your turn to add your name to the others. Some of the names are of people who have joined Maple Street since I have ceased attending. Thank you very much. In Christ, - Adelaide Hale

Youth Auction Biggest Yet!

It was the biggest one yet. And Maple Street youth are Oklahoma bound in fine style after their Youth Auction brought in $1,322 after worship on May 5. Talk about drama! It was brother bidding against brother, father against son, and the preacher against about everybody. Top price this year was paid by Cory Boyer, who "bought" his mom and sister to clean his room. They’ll do it, too — for $122. Ron Boyer also won "Matt and Rick Snider" for $110. Three work teams went for $105 — Ashley and Kristie Howard, by Rick Snider; Heather Springer and Kathy Boyer, by Dustin Boyer; and Doug Phillips, by Pastor Don. Other teams, and winners, include — Zach & Drema Chaffin, $101 by Mark Renko; Jerry & Brian DeLong, $101 by Mitch Nusser; Danielle & Bill McBroom, $100 by Bob McBroom; Whitney & Mitch Nusser, $99 by Robert Amiet (who actually paid $100); Josh & Bryan DeLong, $90 by Marion Sherwood; Zach Chaffin, $60 for 10 hours of martial arts instructions by Joe Nixon; Joe & Julie Nixon, $50 by Robin McBroom; Emily Mendell, $40 by the Hinkles. Dick and Donna Gunder contributed $60.

It was a lot of fun, and the big winner was the youth mission trip. Just a reminder, theyouth, and their helpers, were auctioned for any job that they agree to do. However, these jobs should last no longer than 3 hours, unless alternate arrangements are made prior to the bidding. The auctions have been a lot of fun in the past and they have raised a lot of money for our missions fund. We’re thankful this year was no different.

The countdown to Oklahoma is upon us. The youth will be taking their second mission trip in a few short months. I will be contacting the parents in regards to a meeting about the trip in the near future. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our church family for all of their help and support in our mission efforts.

The youth would like to remind everyone that the Kite Regatta is to be held on Sunday, May 19th, 2002 at 2:00p.m. The regatta will be held at the soccer fields on East Main Street. Please join us in the praising of our Lord. Trophies and prizes will again be awarded, by the United Methodist Men.

The youth took part in this year’s Bible reading marathon. This was the second year that the youth has participated. All went well, and we look forward to doing it again next year. We thank Helen for giving us the opportunity.

— Maple Street Youth, Shawn Hinkle, coordinator

Summer The choir year is about over and it is time to start thinking about our summer music program. If you would like to share with us this summer please sign the sheet on the choir room door. Give your name, song title and composer/arranger. We have always had a nice response to this ministry. Thank you in advance and God Bless. - Steve McGee, Director of Music

Chimes

The children’s chime choir will practice each Sunday in May after morning worship. They will play the second Sunday in May and the first Sunday in June. Parents, please help us out by having your children present. Thank you. - Steve McGee, Director of Music

Prayer Pictures To be Taken of Kids

The Education Committee is going to be taking pictures of the children in the church. The pictures will be placed on a display with first names only on them.

These pictures will be available for people of the church to pick up and pray for the child or children.

If you wish more information, or if you do not want your child’s picture to be taken, please call Melinda Noland at 689-9516 by May 26th because pictures will be taken in June.

Thank you.

- Melinda Noland

Troop 106 Newsletter

Troop 106 announces the appointment of Wayne LaRue as Scoutmaster. Wayne accepts the leadership position following the resignation of Mike Conkey The scouts extend a big “Thank You” to Mike for his leadership as Scoutmaster. Wayne brings a love of the outdoors and a wealth of wilderness experience to the position of Scoutmaster. He has three sons in the program: John, Jake and Josh LaRue.

We welcome the addition of Scout Zach Poling and his Dad Scott to Troop 106. Zach is a graduate of Pack 188 at Medill Elementary. Scott served as Assistant Pack Leader, and provides leadership assistance to Troop 106 as an Assistant Scoutmaster.

A Court of Honor was held on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. District Executive Shawn Ford gave a presentation, advancements were awarded, and arrangements for summer camp 2002 were discussed. Dave Brehm gave an overview of new regulations that will be implemented at summer camp this year. Scouts and their families brought a dessert to share. The Troop provided drinks.

Troop 106 will be hosting the Spring Camporee at Camp Buckeye on Friday, April 19 thru Sunday, April 21, 2002, under the guidance of Dave Brehm. The event will challenge the scouts to build archways for their campsites using their knowledge of lashings and knots. The scouts have been busy making rope and designing their archway for this event.

On Saturday, February 2, 2002, Troop 106 and Maple Street United Methodist Church participated in the Ten Commandment Hike. The event takes scout members on a hike through participating churches in Lancaster, explaining the origins of their church, and one of the Ten Commandments. Thank You to Maple Street for their participation in this event.

Scouts participated in Scout Civic Day on Wednesday, February 6, 2002. The event at the Olivedale Senior Center started with breakfast for the scouts and community leaders. Following breakfast, the scouts participated in a tour of city and county offices. This provided them with a first hand view of how many of the integral components of Lancaster and Fairfield County government function.
