Pumpkins Picked!

With those simple words, Missions Team Leader Janet Meadows announced the completion of a project that brought in $1,000 to meet this year’s Missions commitments. Above, Ed Sharp loads pumpkins on a trailer for delivery to the market. More about the exciting Missions work of Maple Street on Pages 9.  10 and 11. Thanks for your wonderful support.

Unforgettable

Moments

At Maple Street

It was breath-taking, when those men and women brought the colors into the service of Worship and Praise on September 8. It a holy time. The pictures tell the story in the center section of this month’s Maple Leaf.

Church Conference

Will be November 4

Newark District Supt. Sue Ellen Miller will preside at the annual Maple Street Church Conference Monday, November 4th at 7 p.m. Mt. Zion UMC also will have its charge conference that night at Maple Street.

Church Conference is the annual policy-setting meeting. All members of the church may attend and have a vote. The previous year of ministry will be reviewed, and the coming year planned. Major decisions include election of leaders and setting pastoral compensation.

Food

For

 Body

And Soul!

Spirit Wednesday is a time when both body and soul are fed. This year a meal is served to all who wish to attend at 6 p.m. Beginning at 6:30 our children’s programs and Bible Study sessions start. The programs reach those from 3 years through adult. Above DanielMcBrrrm (left) Kaylnn Renko and Stacy Renko hoist a 6-foot sub that served about 50 people recently. The sub was provided by the Maple Leaf Sunday School Class. Other groups which provide and serve the Wednesday, 6 p.m. meal include the Wednesday Community Kitchen Crew, the New Beginners Class and the SOS Class. On months when there are five Wednesdays, the Children’s Department provides pizza. There is no charge for the meal, although an offering basket is provided. It is recommended that families contribute no more than $2 per week for the meal. Children’s Coordinator Marianne Jackson said an average of 50 students are attending the Spirit Wednesday. This includes the new sessions for Spirit Explorers (7th grade and up) and the Adult Bible Studies. We hope you will plan to join us in this wonderful time of learning about our Lord Jesus.

Borrowing from 'Selves Makes Sense & Dollars

By MITCH NUSSER, Chair, Finance Committed

About two months ago, the Administrative Council instructed the Finance Committee to change how we borrow money. Basically, the AC said it makes more sense to borrow money from ourselves than it does to borrom money from commercial lenders.

In response, the Finance team borrowed $5,560 from the General Fund Endowment to pay off the $5,560 owed to a local bank. The sense of the cents is this:

Maple Street in September was paying the bank and annual percentage rate of 5.75 — or a yearly amount of $319.70. The interest rate at the bank fluctuated, and actually had been higher earlier this year.

Also, Maple Street had been receiving from the bank where the General Fund Endowment was kept a percentage rate of 1.04. This means that the $5,560 would earn a yearly return of $57.83. Well, what finance has done is:

Paid off the bank, and is paying back to General Fund Endowment money at a 2.5 per cent annual rate. This means, the church will pay itself back $111.20, thus saving itself $208.50. Therefore, there really is no outgo from the church, and the General Fund Endowment will receive back $112.20, not $57.83, which is a increase of $53.37. That is nearly double what the bank was paying us.

These figures, of course, will change during the year, as money is paid back, or borrowed. But, we have reduced outflow and increased income to the endowment. The Finance Committee believes the Administrative Council made a wise decision, and know that you will agree.

Music

Notes

by Steve McGee

The Music Department of Maple Street Church had their annual kick-off picnic at the home of Steve McGee, Saturday, August 31st at 6:00 pm. Many were in attendance and everyone had a great time. Lots of good food and fellowship was enjoyed by all. Rick Hart brought his guitar and led a sing along. Ge also shared with us another one of his wonderful original compositions. Rick shared that song with the congregation on September 22nd. Beautiful Music Rick, Thank you. You are so talented and God Bless!!

The Music Ministries are in full swing for the 2002-2003 season. Chancel Choir practices on Thursdays at 7:30 pm. Bells of Praise practice at 6:30 pm on Thursdays. Praise Team practices at 5:00 pm on Sundays and Heavenly Chimes practices at 11:30 am on Sundays or 15 minutes after church lets out. Joyful voices rehearse Wednesdays at 6:30 pm. Brass Choir TBA as needed.

We invite anyone who would like to participate and share in one or more of our Music Ministries to please feel free to come to a rehearsal and give it a try. We have plenty of room for anyone and everyone to participate in all of our groups.

A Love for the Lord, a sense of humor and a sincere desire to serve God through our music is all that is required to participate. We hope to see many new faces in our ranks this fall and in the future.

As a point of interest, I believe

Conference UMW Event Nov. 2

Maple Street’s United Methodist Women have been busy, and would like to extend an invitation to any ladies of our congregation to join us in attending the 29th Annual Celebration of the UMW of the West Ohio Conference on Saturday, November 2, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Villa Milano, 1630 Schrock Rd., Columbus.

Bible Study will be led by Cincinnati’s District Superintendent, the Rev. Greg Stover. Guest Speaker: Abdur-Rauf Rashid, founder of the National Council of Ex-Offenders, Inc. Reservations & fee of $12 are due prior to October 12. Please contact Gay Seifert 654-1394 for more information. We will probably carpool from the church. The programs presented are excellent and it is truly a lot of fun.

Speaking of fun, our unit attended a couple of delightful programs in September, including being guests of Sixth Avenue UMW. Carmen Horn presented an outstanding program. She had everyone wear hats and used that in her program. We also went to Etna UM Church for Annual Day for the swearing in of officers for 2003 and again, an exceptional program "Virtuous Women Who Knew Jesus". We were awarded a Silver "Mission Today" certificate from the West Ohio Conference. Mission Today promotes the use of mission resources throughout the organization, increases contact between mission personnel & projects, explains money distributions, expands concepts of mission and energizes United Methodist Women to be more involved through prayer, study and action. Our award will be proudly placed in the showcase.

The Executive Committee for 2003 for our United Methodist Women unit has been named. Gay Seifert, President; Marjorie Allen, Vice-President; Janet Meadows, Honorary Vice-President; Kathie Fosnaugh, Secretary; Arlene Ramsey, Treasurer; Dorothy Franklin, Program Resources; Margaret Robbins, Membership; and Helen Parcels, Social Action. In addition, Janet will head up Spiritual Growth, Marjorie will be in charge of Education & Interpretation and Kathie will be Communication Coordinator.

One interesting item I want to share with the ladies of Maple Street is that, of all the women attending the Etna gathering, only 10 of us were under the age of 50 years old. This is an area our church needs to improve upon. The programs I have attended have been informative, entertaining and the ladies from other churches in our Newark District have been warm and inviting. Please consider joining us.

Pumpkin Pickers Produce!

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL BAKE SALE

Proceeds from our bake sale at the Farmers’ Market on September 14th were $290. Mitch & Diane Nusser handled the sale with help from Margaret & Ed Robbins and Frank Melick. Bookmarks, designed by Dianne Nusser and listing all the services held at Maple Street were made and given to each customer at the sale. Many thanks to all who donated items for this sale.

THE PUMPKINS ARE PICKED

Maple Street has received $1,000 for its Mission work. On September 14th around 50 people from Maple Street helped with the pumpkin picking at Dave Ward’s and again on September 21 around 30 people showed up to pick. We picked two 10-acre fields. There was lots of sweat, but I don’t think there was any blood or tears. We had a great time of fellowship and a great meal with roasted pig. The Missions team wants all the workers to know how much we appreciated your help. Because of you Maple Street will be able to reach out to others in need.

MISSIONS SUNDAY

Mission Emphasis Sunday is November 17th. Special speaker for morning Worship service will be Jim Hofstetter from International Child

(continued on page #10)

One of the day’s hardest workers was Helen Parcels, shown above at a distance loading a bin. Above, Ed Sharp loads pumpkins on a trailer using a tractor. Dave Ward estimated 10,000 pumpkins were picked by workers.

Fred Mendell, Dianne Combs and David Fairchild load pumpkins; Judy Strawn (right) cuts them off the vines. She knows how to use shears.

Terry Balsimo (left) and Matt and Rick Snider add to the stack; Larry Noland (top) is all business with the roasted pig.  About 50 volunteers helped on this day.

Accompanist Still Needed

there are several people in the congregation that would like to sing in the choir but don’t really want to leave their spouse or loved ones for the entire service. Well, here is your opportunity to come and share your talents. The Chancel Choir will be leaving the loft after the anthem and joining their family, friends and spouses for the second half of the service. If this appeals to you please prayerfully consider coming and joining our fellowship. You will find that serving your Lord and Savior can be very rewarding and you will be truly blessed. We have fun doing it too! Come and be part of your Chancel Choir! (P.S. We will not always leave the loft. Christmas and Easter will be the exceptions for sure.)

We still are looking for a choir accompanist. If anyone knows of someone who might be interested in this position, please let me know. Thanks.- Steve McGee, Director of Music

Youth Plan Yearly Visit

To Hospital Ped Unit

The Maple Street Youth are meeting in the youth room directly after worship service each Sunday. The meeting lasts from 11:30 to 12:30. We continue to visit LanFair on the second Sunday of each month. That service is from 1:30 to approximately 2:00 p.m.

We are going on a weiner roast and activity night at the Fosnaugh homestead on the 4th of October. We will be playing lots of games and eating lots of hot dogs. We would like to thank them for this opportunity.

We are already planning for the holidays and our Christmas trip to the hospital. We will be delivering gifts to the children in the pediatric unit. We all look forward to serving our Lord this school year.

Shawn Hinkle--Youth Coordinator

FOR THE CHILDREN — "It is better than sitting around doing nothing, or dozing off." So, Cecil Jones makes simple dresses and shorts sets for the children of Haiti. Above, she sits with her latest batch of clothes from material pieces she had, was given or made do by using two kinds of cloth to make a single garment. She has made about 50 garments total, which are sent to Haiti through Child Care International, the agency which has worked closely with Maple Street Church for the past two or three years. In fact, the Missions Committee is planning a mission trip there for next year. And, oh, by the way: Cecil just turned 89 years old.

This One Didn’t

Get Away

from Lisa

Lisa DeLong beams after "snagging" a delicious lunker at the September 28 Fish Fry at Maple Street. Lisa worked in the sweltering kitchen, filling plate after plate after plate. It was a tremendous day for Fish Lovers. More than 400 meals were served and great fellowship enjoyed. Receipts totaled (as of Sept. 30) $2,973, with expenses of $1,451.70, resulting in a preliminary profit of $1,521.30. That money will be used to pay toward our 2002 apportionments. David Fair-child and Rick Combs wants to say a mighty big "THANK YOU" to the many, many people who worked. It was a full-team effort, and the Maple Street Family can be very proud, they said. The next Fish Fry will be Nov. 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. Please tell your friends to keep the date open, for food, fun and fellowship.
